Facts about August's Birthstone - Peridot & Sardonyx
It was once believed that the peridot glowed with light even as darkness fell, which is why miners were said to have scouted fot these gems during the night, marking their location, and returning in the light of day to retrieve them.
Years ago, natives discovered peridot crystals in the black sands of Hawaii, explaining their presence as tears shed by Pele, the volcano goddess.
Sadonyx was worn as atlismanby the Egyptians to protect against infections and evil.
Between 80 and 95 percent of the world's peridot comes from the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona.
Traces of peridot have been found in meteorites, making it the only jewellery-quality gem to exist in outer space.
The peridot is one of the few gemstones that come in only one colour. The gem's rich green with a slight tinge of gold is caused by very fine traces of iron.

Why we love turquoise?
The colour turquoise is such a vibrant happy neutral. It goes with every other colour purple, red, brown. Grey, white, black, yellow, green and pink. Can you think of a color it doesnt go with? Turquoise is Decembers birthstone and for 2010 it is the color of the year.. Turquoise is a natural stone. It has veins of copper and black. Other stones that are the color turquoise include Peruvian opal, chalcedony, and amazonite. These are not as vibrant as the turquoise stone but equally neutral. Wear your turquoise regularly, mix it with pearls or metal. You will get lots of compliments!
